Pembina Trails School Division - Academics is Just Part of What We Do
It is 3:30 pm on Thursday and Carlos and Louis have just completed their AP Chemistry class at Shaftesbury High School in the Pembina Trails School Division in Winnipeg, the ‘Heart’ of Canada.
Heading home, Carlos asks Louis?
No, replies Louis. I have the Shaftesbury Hockey Academy today at 4:30 pm.
I would come and watch you, says Carlos, but I have a musical drama rehearsal and then my homestay family is taking me to the new IKEA.
Yes, I heard that the IKEA just opened on November 28. It is the largest IKEA in Canada, remarks Louis.
Are you going on the Christmas Sleigh Ride this weekend, asks Carlos?
You bet I am, replies Louis. How about you? Will you be there?
I wouldn’t miss it, replies Carlos. I am just glad that it does not conflict with the ski trip that my homestay family has planned. Did you get the email from Paul about the 3 day camping excursion in June? We need to let him know soon about our intention.
Sure did, replies Louis.I am really looking forward to it. I have already emailed Paul to confirm my attendance.
Me too, answers Carlos.
Got to run, says Louis.
Have fun at the academy, Carlos says encouragingly as the boys depart.
Break a leg – if you know what I mean, replies Louis.

Getting involved outside of the classroom via extra-curricular activities is a very important part of a study abroad experience. Pembina Trails is one of the few school divisions in Canada that employs a full-time ‘Activities Facilitator’ – Paul Friesen. Paul plans and implements a variety of activities throughout the year for our program that brings the cultural component of a study abroad experience to the forefront, with an emphasis on Winter. Photos are posted on our website for friends and family of our students to enjoy. Facebook and You Tube are also used to share their experience.
